The chimp who says just what she thinks

She looks and behaves like any other mischievous chimp – in every respect except one. For 14-year-old Panbanisha has the language skills of a 4-year-old child.

According to her keepers she has a vocabulary of 3,000 English words, and speaks through a computer voice synthesizer. If she is hungry, she will say “Please buy me a burger”. If she is enjoying a hot drink, she will say “Good coffee” to her guests.

Scientists have been teaching apes sign language for decades, and this was Panbanisha’s first method of communication. Then she was given a specially-designed keyboard. It has 400 buttons, each marked with a symbol standing for a word such as “orange”, “up”, or “coffee”, or an abstract concept such as “good” or “give me”. As she types the symbols, the words appear on a computer screen and are spoken aloud by the computer voice.

Duane Rumbaugh, Professor of Biology and Psychology, said: “This is exciting research. The animals can understand the spoken word and give appropriate replies. It shows that language skills are not confined to humans and implies that, like us, apes have the power of thought and reasoning.”
